I have this memory -
I've had this memory for years:
I remember a review in Musician magazine about the first Crowded House album (and so the only Crowded House album). I remember reading that review. I remember it saying, basically, "You should buy this album." The album was that good.
So I did. I bought it.
And the review was right. It is a fantastic album. 35 years later, it's still one of my favorite albums. I know it by heart. I can play it in my head even when months go by without a listen.
And finally, with that memory surfacing in my head every now and again, I went to look for that review. I can remember taking the magazine out of the mailbox; I can remember picking the album out of the bin at the record store, taking it home, listening, listening again.
The library has electronic access to old copies of Musician, so I searched for "crowded house" and "review" and looked for things around 1989.
And there it was.
And it was JUST like I remember:
I have played it several times a day for the past three weeks just to remind myself that this review, this magazine and my life really do have a purpose. Which is to make you buy Crowded House.
Buy it and give this review, this magazine and my life meaning.
I am grateful to Charles M. Young for telling me, plainly and meaningfully, to buy this record. He was right, and he is still right,
and if you don't already own Crowded House, I will tell you too, because joy is joy and music is magical and everyone should get to have gorgeous melodies and brilliant ballads and sharp arrangements and Crowded House harmonies in their lives.
Young was right, and I wish you, too, the pleasure and joy of Crowded House.
