The problem with wanting to learn everything is that everything I learn makes me want to learn more of everything else.
I picked up some paperback Homer, both Odyssey and Iliad, at the big library book sale this year. Then, somewhere, I stumbled across a book called Homeric Moments: Clues to Delight in Reading the Odyssey and the Iliad. (I think I was just poking around in the library's online catalog.)
I've just started reading it, and it's making me want to learn Greek. (The author, Eva Brann, admits that this is a hidden agenda behind the book: "to snaffle at least a few readers into learning Greek. What else, after all, is so important, once livelihood is assured and the family launched and leisure left over?" What else, indeed?
So tonight, I opened the Teach Yourself Books: Greek I picked up at that same library sale and started learning the Greek alphabet. So far, it's going pretty well; I'm having a terrible time mixing up gamma and lambda, but I was able to sound out the Lord's Prayer fairly well. I didn't do that well on the exercises, though. I definitely need to practice more.
