I'm about halfway through this, and I'm enjoying it much more than I thought I would. For some reason I had a sense that it might be more serious than I was in the mood for (it is, indeed, fairly serious), and just not very engaging. But I'm finding I'm liking all the characters quite a lot, and the lives of both main characters are compelling. Halpern maintains a lot of mystery around both lives, so there's a sense of suspense that keeps me curious.
Books - Now Reading
I was delighted to find this in one of my neighborhood free library boxes.
I could have sworn I first heard about it via the NPR Book Concierge (now known as Best Books), but I don't see it anywhere on the site, so I must be mistaken.
As someone who delights in lots of things and tries to make it a practice to notice the delightful, I am the perfect audience for this book.
This is a fantastic biography. It's incredibly well researched (literally: I find it hard to believe how much time and trouble the author took to talk with everyone, read every archived document, chase down every source), and clearly and compellingly told.
I picked this up at the library book sale a few years ago when I was paying extra attention to the travel section.
I'm finding this difficult to read at bedtime. I might do better with it during an afternoon reading break.
